The end of my third 12-week mentorship arrived here at Google+ , the G+ Mentorship ART Program for Photographers through the G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers that I run here, along with Ron Clifford andTamara Pruessner.
It is with mixed feelings that I come to the end of each mentorship; sad about the close of a very intense time with a great group of people that I have grown to love over the weeks, but very happy to read of the triumphs that the members have had from the time. The quality of the work from these folks has certainly been enough to eclipse any melancholy I might feel. Thank you for letting me share with you their works from that time over these few weeks. One phrase keeps coming to mind when I think about how to sum up my experience of Robin Griggs Wood's G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers...
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
I'm thinking of the Disneyland Ride when I say this, not The Wind in the Willows book, which was apparently the inspiration for the ride (I just fed my Muse a little nibble by looking this up - I even just bought the book to read! And maybe it is an appropriate comparison. I'll soon find out!!). So what exactly do I mean by that, anyway? Well, it's been a wild ride! An amazing, scary, exhilarating, emotional, uplifting, inspirational, crazy wild ride!
I had little more than a vague notion of what the program was when I signed up. To be honest, I was very intimidated at even the thought of doing so! But by some miracle, I gathered enough courage to comment on that fateful signup post, and much to myshock surprise, I was welcomed with open arms!! And it's been a whirlwind - in a good way - ever since!
This program, which I thought was about artistry in photography, is about so much more. At its core, it truly is about personal empowerment. Robin is one the most authentic and caring people I have ever met. Her belief in her mentees creates the space for us to step into who we really are as artists and as people! She sees beyond what we see in ourselves, to the perfection that resides within all of us, and magically draws it to the surface so we shine bright! I have gone from being a scared, extremely under-confident, haphazard wanna-be photographer, to a sanguine artist. I'm also a kinder, gentler person to myself and others. That's certainly an outcome I never expected from the program.
Prior to the Mentorship, I had a few photos that I thought were "really good" but they were also what I consider to be flukes. By that, I mean they were not taken with intention and I hadn't truly understood what I was seeing or what I wanted to show the world when I pushed the shutter button. I just knew I liked "something." Thanks to this program, I am now able to identify what it is that grabs my attention in a scene and take a picture, with intention, that captures that vision. And I get to pull out all the stops once I get into the digital darkroom, which I totally love doing! I'm able to use so much of what I learned in the program there as well, and that is so exciting to me!
Presto, chango, I'm an artist!! Just like that! In 13 weeks! How on earth did that happen? Okay, it wasn't really "just like that"...
The program has pushed me well beyond the bounds of my comfort zone, photographically and personally. I've had to confront and deal with some pretty hefty self-limiting beliefs head on, and it hasn't been easy. More than once, I almost gave up. But thanks to the support of the my fellow mentees, Robin, and her PIF crew, I made it. I didn't have to go it alone because someone was always there to lend a helping hand and help brush me off when I fell.
The program is not for the faint of heart! On the other hand, I've experienced one of the greatest personal growth spurts of my entire life. And it is all due to the energy of the group and what Robin brings to the table. After all, no one ever achieved greatness by staying in their comfort zone!
I know that there is still so much for me to learn, but I hope I never stop! It truly feeds the soul and nourishes the Muse that lives in all of us. I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am fully capable and worthy of the greatness I only once, in the not so distant past, dreamed of. What a wild ride the past 13 weeks has been!!! Thank you, Robin! And thank you to all my new friends who were my companions on the journey. You're all so amazing!!
If you have ever dreamed of being an artist, and you are ready for your own wild ride, then I highly encourage you to sign up for the mentorship. You don't have to be an experienced photographer (but you can be) to join in. You just need the desire to improve and learn. And if you've ever wanted to be a mentor, Robin even has programs for that. I haven't taken that on myself, but if that program is anything like what I just did, I know it would be a life changer as well!
