The Interpreting the Street: Fine art street photography mentorship is ready for sign-ups!
 
This is a special program for street photographers who want to explore turning their street images into fine art through the G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

I will be taking on a handful of people for a 9-week on-line mentorship program, which will include lessons, assignments, and informal discussions. Everyone who participates can have fun and learn at the same time!
 
I am a level 30 apprentice in The Arcanum, an online master/apprenticeship program, and on the path to become a master myself. During my time in the program, I discovered and honed my skills in street and other types of urban photography.  I put out an urban photo-essay magazine called Urban Weird Photo four times a year and am at the beginning stages of setting up a guided photo walk business here in Tokyo, Japan.

My goal for you upon completion of your mentorship with me is to have the confidence to take your street photography beyond Henri Cartier-Bresson’s important “decisive moment” into the realm of what Julia Anna Gospodarou calls “decisive interpretation” by learning how to interpret an image while on the streets through quick analysis of the scene using compositional elements and principles and while in post-processing with a focus on playing - yes, playing - with color and value in Lightroom, Google Nik plug-ins and/or Macphun plug-ins, and a little bit of Photoshop. In a more tangible sense, you will end up with a portfolio of fine art images that you’ve created throughout the 9 weeks of this mentorship. This mentorship is not only about practicing but also about contemplating what it means to do street photography and fine art.

PLEASE NOTE: Even though post-processing is not the only thing we will be doing throughout the mentorship, we will be eventually working with various photo-editing programs, namely, Lightroom (or equivalent that uses sliders, brushes, and basic filters, i.e., Aperture, On1), the Nik and Macphun suites, and Photoshop. Therefore, it is essential to have a version of Lightroom (or equivalent) and one of or both Nik and Macphun suites. Photoshop is recommended but not a deal breaker if you do not have it since we will be only doing very basic edits with it towards the end. This mentorship is geared toward those interested or just starting out in street photography who want to try and gain the confidence in “massaging” their images to what they perceived during capture or want others to see and go beyond the commom documentary style of street.

Selections will begin on 23 November 2015 for the mentorship beginning on 30 November 2015. I realize this mentorship is going the last through the holiday season, so if the group thinks it necessary we can take a week off between Christmas and New Years (So the mentorship would actually last 10 weeks). If the majority do not need a break, then we will continue as planned.

These are the selection criteria:

• You must be taking and posting your own photographs regularly here on G+ –– an absolute minimum of three days between Public posts; more increases your chances of being selected. (The class itself will be private to the group selected except for the option of a public display album of your best work at the end.)
• You must be interactive here at G+, as you will be expected to participate in this program giving feedback and comments to others.
• You have the time available to participate in this workshop.
• You must have an interest in street/urban and fine art photography
