Building An Image – Assignment 1  LITE VERSION

There are many things that go into a photograph – from design elements, to rules or breaking rules, and of course, telling a story.  The story is what ties everything together.  It is the icing on the cake, so to speak.

This lite mentorship will try to focus a bit on how to get your story out and how to get the emotional impact that takes a photo from very good to unforgettable.

Keep in mind that for every image, there are two human elements involved, not including subject matter: the photographer and the audience.  The photographer’s job is to tell the story of what they saw by use of their camera, settings, skills, design elements and, most importantly, their eye.

This week, we are going to focus on two of the six design elements; this is how we will start building our stories – the images that we see in our minds.

LINES & SHAPES   

Lines tend to be one of the strongest elements.  They can be used to lead the eye into interesting areas of a photograph or right out of one. 

Shapes are the element of identification.  When shapes are the most important element in your photography, remember to keep them with a strong contrast against the background.

THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT: Two parts – Lines and Shapes

This week, I challenge you to go out look for just lines and shapes.  Find them and spend a good amount of time just shooting them.  Try to shoot them separately.  I usually suggest about 100 images of each.  Play with different angles, settings, times of day... just go out and concentrate on those two elements.

FOR SATURDAY, JULY 18th

Once you have shot your lines and shapes, go through them and pick your favorite one to process of each element.  Then, post them on your profile and don't forget to hashtag them with #BuildingAnImage . Sometime the following week, I will try to go through the hashtag and see if anyone had any problems or anything and comment along.
